White Sands National Park Fun Facts:
- You can spot an African Oryx in the park. There are over 3,000 after 93 were imported from the African Kalahari Desert and set free between 1969 and 1977.
- A Spanish Maiden called Pavla Blanca is reported to haunt the dunes
- The "sand" is not composed of silica, but instead of pure gypsum
- The sand is known for being pleasant underfoot. This is because gypsum does not absorb heat from the sun like silica sand does, making it a cool surface to walk on even on hot days.
