The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands. It is is one of the seven wonders of the natural world, and pulling away from it, and viewing it from a greater distance, you can understand why. It is larger than the Great Wall of China and the only living thing on earth visible from space. Today the Reef is a Marine Park and World Heritage Area, supporting a range of commercial activities and attracting millions of visitors each year who come to enjoy its beauty above and below the water.
You may have seen and heard a lot about what’s happening on the Great Barrier Reef this year, including the third mass coral bleaching event in the last five years. Bleaching occurs when corals are under stress. A primary cause of coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef during summer is heat stress resulting from high sea temperatures and increased UV radiation. A bleached coral is not dead. Corals can recover from bleaching if heat stress lessens, temperatures reduce, and conditions return to normal.
This mass bleaching reaffirms that climate change remains the single greatest challenge to the Reef and the strongest possible global efforts to reduce emissions are essential, along with local actions in the Marine Park and its catchment. Everyone everywhere can do their bit to protect the Great Barrier Reef for future generations to enjoy. - www.barrierreef.org
